Some think she’s a monster. He thinks she’s the love of his life.

After she sent several men to the hospital, Dame Blanche Eva Winchester is learning to control her power. But she’s also bored to tears. Enter Prince Bertie, who offers her the chance to go undercover as a waitress in order to find out who’s attacking men in the parking lots of Folk-owned clubs. Bertie’s motives aren’t entirely innocent—he’s smitten by the lethal lady’s charms. But he and Eva discover the attacks are part of a more wide-ranging conspiracy, involving the very survival of the Folk.

As their investigations bring Bertie and Eva closer, Eva finds the downside of dating a prince, even one as yummy as Bertie. But when the prince is attacked, Eva swears to protect him. To overcome a ruthless enemy, the two must stage a last-ditch battle in the blizzard-ridden mountains. And this time they’ll need more than love and super strength to survive.

EXCERPT
Eva walked up the street from where she’d left her car. Traffic was brutal because of construction, with an office development going in at the end of the block. Bertie had found the studio for her, and she was taken by the view of the mountains from her window and the amount of natural light. Plus there was space for a workroom if she wanted to start fashioning her own product rather than contracting someone else. She could endure a few traffic jams.

In Animas I had the perfect studio. Good light, ample space, room to grow.

Except going back to Animas was out of the question. Thinking about it only made things worse. Homesickness only made her more restless.

A construction worker carrying scrap to his truck paused to make exaggerated kissing sounds as she walked by. “Oh, baby, shake that thing over here. I’ll give you the ride of your life.”

Eva flicked an imaginary speck of dust from her shoulder, and the board he was carrying whacked him in the knee. She left him hopping up and down and howling.

She never got catcalled in Animas, but they knew her there, she was one of them. And the fact they knew her was the primary reason she couldn’t go back. She wasn’t one of them anymore.

REVIEW
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Paranormal romance isn’t usually my thing, and fae stories are hit or miss. This one pleasantly surprised me in a lot of ways, and I was glad I picked it up.

I didn’t realize going in that this was third in a series. The fact that it didn’t occur to me that there might have been books prior to this one until about halfway in is a sign of Benjamin’s thorough storytelling. I was just so interested in what was happening that any questions I had were whisked away as soon as they came up. Looking back, it probably should have been obvious—what with a rebellion, the hero and heroine already seeming to know each other and having a history, and the looming threats. Rather than confusing me, these things just made me curious. I’m interested to read the first two books now.

One of my favorite things here was the folk themselves. I loved that they all weren’t just super-hot creatures with inhuman sex appeal. There were different clans, and while each had the supernatural looks and grace one might expect, they all weren’t just beyond gorgeous. I liked the differences between the clans and the tension between groups. It all added up to a nice story to run alongside the romance.

Speaking of the romance, it was wonderful and satisfying in all senses of the word. Before I realized this was third in a series, I thought the emotions were moving a bit fast. Once I discovered Bertie and Eva had history, all made sense, and the pacing just fell into place. This is one of the best paranormal couples I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Birdie is a prince, but he isn’t arrogant and doesn’t spend his days melting the panties off every woman he sees. He has a playboy history—fine. But it’s not his entire character, which was refreshing. Eva, too, is different in great ways. She’s got this new super strength, and she’s feeling powerful. She really wants to protect people and do great things with her powers. She becomes a kickbutt heroine, but later on, she changes. Without spoiling, she realizes things that make her a female character who’s not afraid not to punch things. So much respect for that.

Off the top of my head, I have nothing negative to say. There are still some things I’m a bit fuzzy on, but I suspect reading the first two books would clear all that up. I highly recommend this book and series.
