THE BLUE UNICORN'S JOURNEY TO OSM by Sybrina Durant

THE BLUE UNICORN’S JOURNEY TO OSM
by Sybrina Durant

The book is about a little blue unicorn who was born into a magical metal-horned tribe of unicorns. He is expected to save the tribe from the evil sorcerer, Magh but how will he be able to do that with no metal and no magic? Read the book to find out how a plain blue unicorn comes of age with the help of a brave stag and a loyal firebird. The book is meant for teen readers and anyone else who love unicorn stories with lots of pictures.

EXCERPT
“Why, would you take off alone, Ghel?” Alumna asked. “You know how dangerous it is out there. You were almost a manticore’s dinner.”

It was obvious Alumna was angry. She tried to control her voice but it came out in sharp, short tones.

“Or worse,” Lauda exclaimed, “you might have been captured by Magh’s minions and had your hooves and horn taken.” The hide on her back rippled fearfully.

Ghel shuddered, too. She had thought she was doomed when she first saw the manticore. She would have been if Nix had not arrived in the nick of time to save her.

All the other unicorns put on brave faces but the thought scared them, also.

The seriousness of their situation was fully revealed when Alumna said, “The entire tribe is going to have to make a journey all the way across MarBryn to Muzika Woods.”

She showed them the map which she had wanted to show the entire tribe at the same time. Unfortunately, Blue never saw it. Even with the map, there was no way to know which direction he had taken.

“All he knows is that he is supposed to get to Muzika Woods,” Alumna said sadly. "The Numen told me Blue’s destiny is to ensure the safety of our tribe. He said it is time for Blue to join with the Moon-Star.”

No one tried to hide the shock they felt. They all spoke at once: “Join with the Moon-Star?”

"Corn feathers! Is he gonna sprout wings to do this trick?" Lauda exploded. "The Moon-Star’s in the sky and Blue sure as heck can’t fly.”

They all thought it sounded like nonsense. Unicorns cannot fly.

REVIEW
THE BLUE UNICORN’S JOURNEY TO OSM is a cute coming of age story. Blue, the main character, grapples with feeling weak and helpless and wanting to fit into a clan where he’s not sure he belongs. Durant sets up lots of conflict for Blue, and the book is full of suspense, action, and romance as Blue learns the true meanings of friendship, strength, and family.

This is a quick, enjoyable read. I easily attached to the characters and wanted to see everything work out for them in the end. Similarly, I took an immediate dislike to Magh, the evil sorcerer. I would have liked a little more about him as it took me a bit to really feel his threat, but the villain himself was believable, especially with his backstory.

The only question I had with this story was the readership. The blurb says it’s targeted at teen readers, so I went into it expecting one thing and got another. As a result, it took me a bit to get into the story. I’d say this book is more a coming-of-age story aimed at children and preteens. Once I realized that, I settled into the story without a problem.

Finally, I need to nod to Style. She is my favorite character. I’d love to have a unicorn friend who could poof crowns or jewelry into existence. My taste in jewelry runs pretty eclectic, and I have a tough time finding things I like.

  2. Thank you for the tour and the very nice review. :) Yes, it was hard to categorize the age group for this book. I had originally thought it should be for middle grader but then some readers had concerns about some of the more mature aspects of the book like the battle scenes and the really evil wizard. So, I decided to classify it for teens and older readers. If anyone else has any questions about the story or any of the characters, I will be happy to answer. :)

  5. I loved fantasy books, even when I was very young. I guess the first were Brother's Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen short stories with beautiful illustrations. The pictures were what really drew me into the stories. Later, I really enjoyed books like the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. Once again, it was the illustrations that really sent my imagination soaring. That's one of the reasons I wanted to create an illustrated book for older readers. It's a little enhancement to the movie that you have playing in your mind as you read. :)
