LAKE OF SINS: HANGMAN’S ARMY
by L.S. O’dea

A rebellion is brewing in the world of the Lake of Sins while Hugh Truent sits in prison days away from his execution.

After taking his findings about the genetic similarities between the classes to the Supreme Almighty and the Council, Hugh had been arrested for treason and all his evidence had vanished as if made from smoke.

To protect his family, he cut off all contact with the outside world while he sat in prison for over four years waiting for his execution. He has no idea that some of his reports were leaked to the other classes and that civil war looms on the horizon.

Trinity and her friends have no hope of winning the war unless they can unite the classes. In order to do that, they need someone everyone will follow. They need the one person all the classes trust and believe in. They need Hugh.

That means they have to break him out of a maximum security prison and convince him to lead their army, but that won’t be easy because Hugh wants revenge and he’s not going to let anything get in his way especially mouthy, attractive, know-it-all Trinity.

EXCERPT
Trinity didn’t reply, but her back was straighter than before. He was getting on her nerves. Good because she sure got on his. She was nothing but trouble, an attractive know-it-all who refused to listen to anyone. His hand met the end of the rope. It was still a long way to the ground.

Jackson waited alongside the building with Tim. They were both flat against the wall, trying not to be seen.

“Drop. You’ll be fine.” Her voice was soft, no longer acidic and mocking.

He couldn’t deal with her being kind to him. They’d done so well bickering. The trip had been fast and he hadn’t thought much about the danger. “I’m an Almighty. My kind doesn’t always land on their feet.”

“Let go,” she said, a hint of anger in her voice.

“I will.” His hands tightened on the rope. A fall like this could break something.

“Now,” she snapped. “Or I’ll kick you in the face and say a prayer that you land on your head.”

Her foot waved above his head. He wouldn’t put it past her to do what she threatened. She’d probably enjoy it. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, pushed back with his feet and let go. He was free. It was glorious. No chains. No cell. Just the air and the sky and…the ground. He hit hard, his legs taking the brunt of the fall. He rolled onto his back as Jackson’s hand grabbed his and pulled him to his feet. He touched his face, the impact of his landing still rattled through his teeth. Trinity dropped gracefully next to him. He hated House Servants, every last one of them.

AN INTERVIEW WITH L.S.
-What inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to write since I can remember. Of course, I can’t remember too much of my childhood – just bits and pieces, snapshots. I was sick when I was in third grade and spent months lying on the couch. I was only allowed to get up to walk to the bathroom and bedroom. This was a long time ago, way before computers, video games, and cartoon network. There were cartoons on for a few hours in the afternoon and then it was all soap operas, so my TV time was done. I spent a lot of time reading. A LOT.

I think that’s probably when the first seeds of my future were planted. I don’t remember being inspired to write but I loved stories and books – still do.

-If you could visit your book’s world for a day, what one thing would you do?

Hide. I’m not kidding. The world of the Lake of Sins is not friendly and I’d be basically helpless – I’m too much like an Almighty. Now, if I had an escort (Trinity) then I’d love to meet Gaar and Mirra and Christian the River-Man. If I could go – like on a safari – I’d love to tour the forest and see all the “monsters” in their natural habitat. I’d probably also give Trinity a hug. I think she needs one and Hugh too. And Jethro, well, I think it’d break my heart to meet him.

-Give us a fun or interesting fact you learned researching this book.

I did a lot of research on various animals for this series. I wanted to know about sight, scent and hearing abilities of cats, both house and wild, dogs, wolves, reptiles and even cattle and deer. It was all interesting – animals are absolutely amazing – but the weirdest thing I came across was the data about cats and falling.

They did studies (don’t recall who but here’s a link that I found that talks about the same study I looked up: http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/11/domestic-cats-can-fall-from-any-height-with-a-remarkable-survival-rate/ ) and determined that cats can survive falls from great heights and the number of injuries decrease the higher the fall (above seven stories). It’s assumed that cats, after a certain distance, go into a spread eagle (flying squirrel) position which helps them survive the fall.

It’s really strange – but please don’t toss your cat or any cat from a building. They do still get hurt and many die.

-Which of your characters would you go out for drinks with?

I think I’d like to hang out with Jackson and Indy the most. They are both Guards (which are kind of dog/human creatures) and I’m definitely a dog person. They are both loyal and Indy seems like he’d be a lot of fun. They both have wicked senses of humor and love to tease which is like my family.

-You’re in a tavern, and a dwarf challenges you to a duel. What do you do?

Probably die. I think I’d first offer to buy him a drink and try to settle our differences without violence. It’s not because I’m not a violent person (once you read my books you’ll see I wander toward the dark), but because I have no skill in fighting and I don’t want to die or get beat up.

If the dwarf refuses to settle our issues non-violently, then my action would depend on the duel. Is it just a slap down? I might stay and take my beating. Is this a duel to the death? I run. I’m not a coward, but I don’t want to die.

-Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

I don’t think so. There are plenty of genres that don’t appeal to me as a writer – westerns are the first to come to mind – but if I had to, I think I could write a good one because for me, all books are about people and their desires, fears and secrets.

ABOUT L.S.

L. S. O’Dea grew up the youngest of seven in a family that uses teasing and tricks as an indication of love (or at least that’s what she tells herself). Being five years younger than her closest sibling often made her the unwilling entertainment for her brothers and sisters. Before she started kindergarten her brothers taught her how to spell her first and middle name—Linda Sue. She was so proud she ran into the kitchen to tell her mother. She stood tall and recited the letters of her name: L-E-M-O-N H-E-A-D. She’s pretty sure she has her siblings to thank for the demons that lurk in her mind, whispering dark and demented stories.
