NEW YORK NIGHT
by Stephen Leather

Teenagers are being possessed and turning into sadistic murderers. Priests can’t help, nor can psychiatrists. So who is behind the demonic possessions? Jack Nightingale is called in to investigate, and finds his own soul is on the line. New York Night is the seventh novel in the Jack Nightingale supernatural detective series.

EXCERPT
Sara could see that he was afraid so she smiled what she hoped was a comforting smile. ‘It’s a game,’ she said. ‘It’s just a game.’

‘If you want to play a game, let’s play Grand Theft Auto,’ said her brother. Luke was ten, six years younger than she was. They rarely played together but she needed another pair of hands for the Ouija board and Luke could be relied on to do as he was told.

‘Because I want to play this,’ she said.

‘It’s stupid,’ he said. ‘I’ve never heard of a game like this before.’ He sat back on his heels. They were in her bedroom. He was rarely allowed into her room and had looked at her suspiciously when she had first suggested they play a game together.

‘You liked Charlie Charlie didn’t you? Well this is the same. You can ask it question and it’ll answer.’

‘Charlie Charlie is for fun,’ said the boy.

‘So is this. But with Charlie Charlie you can only pick one of four answers, right? This way the spirits can talk to us.’

‘Spirits? You mean ghosts?’

‘It’s all the same. Look, it’s a game. Just a game. Do you want to play or shall I tell mom you haven’t done your homework?’

Okay, okay,’ mumbled Luke. ‘Don’t give me a hard time.’

AN INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN
-What inspired you to become a writer?

My uncle was a writer, mainly for classic TV shows in the 1960s such as The Avengers, Department S, Jason King, and The Champions. I think seeing him work first attracted me to writing as a career. For ten years after leaving university I was a journalist working for newspapers such as The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror. I loved being a journalist but I always wanted to write fiction. I tried writing at university but never made much headway, but after I had worked as a journalist for ten years I found I could finally tackle fiction!

-If you could visit your book’s world for a day, what one thing would you do?

Summon a devil, of course! That’s what Jack is good at, but he knows what he’s doing so I’d want him there in case anything went wrong!

-Give us a fun or interesting fact you learned researching this book.

I hadn’t realised just how complicated law enforcement is in the US! In the UK you just call the police and they come out and deal with the problem. But in the States they have local city police, State police, Sheriffs and the FBI. It took me quite a while to work out who would investigate a murder in New York and in New Jersey, and then I had to work out what sort of car they would drive and what uniforms, if any, they would wear. Life is so much easier in England!

-Which of your characters would you go out for drinks and/or pizza with?

I have a character in my Spider Shepherd books called Charlotte Button who used to work for MI5 but left under a cloud and now works in the private sector. She knows a lot of secrets and I’d hope that a few drinks would loosen her tongue!

-What do you enjoy reading in your free time?

Mainly non-fiction these days, though I still live reading John Le Carre’s work and am a big fan of British thriller writers Matt Hilton and Simon Kernick. At the moment I’m reading a book on lock-picking!

-Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

Erotica. I knew, I just knew, that the popularity of the Kindle would lead to an upsurge in sales of erotic novels. This was a long time before Fifty Shades Of Grey. I knew that because no one could tell what you were reading on a Kindle, more people would choose to buy and read sexy stories. Well, I tried and just couldn’t do it. I just felt embarrassed!
