MATED WITH THE CYBORG by Cara Bristol

MATED WITH THE CYBORG
by Cara Bristol

Kai Andros’s orders were simple. Get in. Gather the intel on the terrorist organization. Get out.

Then he met her. Mariska. Beautiful. Innocent. Ignorant of her father’s atrocities. And marked for death.

His orders said nothing about saving her. But he did. He went off-mission.

Can a rogue cyborg outrun both Cyber Operations and the terrorists to save the woman he loves?

EXCERPT
Mariska’s dress dragged along the metal floor as she headed for the general’s receiving room. People glanced at R981, but the android could have been alone for all the notice they paid her. Her veil seemed to render her invisible.

If only she could truly disappear. Years had passed since the last summons. Why had her father called her? Perspiration slickened her palms, and she had to concentrate to avoid wiping them and leaving a telltale stain on her clothing. The only thing worse than being afraid was showing it. At least her voluminous skirt hid her wobbling knees. Outside her father’s fortified headquarters, she halted and took a deep breath. I can do this. I can do this.

“You are nervous,” stated R981 in his stilted, but gravelly voice. No other android had vocals like his. His rumbling tone vibrated through her in a most disturbing way.

“No, I’m not,” she quickly refuted. Fear was a flaw. Flaws were punished. Although R981 was assigned to her, he had been programmed to report misbehavior and anomalies to her father.

The solid black orbs of his robotic eyes blinked once. “I detect pupil constriction, increased perspiration and respiration, which indicate fear.”

“I believe you are mistaken and require a full diagnostic. How long has it been since your last maintenance overhaul?”

“I am a new model entered into service five weeks ago. I do not require maintenance for another fifty-five point four days.”

She needed to shore up her courage, but R981 pulled open the door, making it clear he served her father. Just like the other droids.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CARA
-What inspired you to become a writer?

I loved reading and loved words. As a kid, I wrote for fun. The education system channeled me into nonfiction, and I became a newspaper reporter, but continued to write fiction as a hobby. I found my niche with erotic romance and sold my first story in 2009. Mated with the Cyborg (Cy-Ops Sci-fi 2) is my 23rd book. Cy-Ops or Cyber Operations is my second sci-fi romance series. Breeder is the first.

-If you could visit your book’s world for a day, what one thing would you do?

I would love to visit the Darius 4 pleasure resort just to gawk. It’s an incredible place. I would want to stay in the beach biodome—but I would get off the planet before the invasion.

-Give us a fun or interesting fact you learned researching this book

I researched “fact” and “fiction” to write this series. I had to look up information about bombs, the particulars that make a cyborg a cyborg, space shuttle sizes, the chemical composition of sand, the NATO phonetic alphabet, all sorts of little things. But I also researched what other sci-fi authors have written so I could offer something unique. Aliens are probably the most common sci-fi romance heroes, but cyborgs, which are part human, part machine, are gaining in popularity. In most cyborg romances, there’s a conspiracy, an evil government that creates the cyborgs and forces them into military service. My cyborgs are undercover spies; they’re Cyber Operatives with a covert paramilitary force who fight against terrorism in the galaxy.

-Which of your characters would you go out for drinks with?

Definitely Kai Andros, the hero of Mated with the Cyborg. He would have great stories to tell. He’s kind of in a sticky situation—he’s gone undercover on an enemy space station, pretending to be an android. When he discovers the villain’s innocent daughter is in danger of losing her life, he’s torn between his duty to his mission and saving her. He’s a man who has seen a lot and knows lot. I’d also invite Dale Homme, a secondary character from Mated with the Cyborg. He’s a charmer! He’ll be the hero of the next Cy-Ops romance.

-If you could go back in time and give your pre-published self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Write romance! I spent a lot of years writing “mainstream” women’s fiction (novels and short stories), but had only modest success getting published. Once I shifted to romance, I sold every single book on the first submission. Erotic romance is definitely my niche!

-Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

I think historical fiction is wonderful. I love Regency romances, for example. But I don’t have the history background to write it accurately.
