In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendants to survive in a harsh universe. This is the sixth book in the science fiction series, The Backworlds. A space opera adventure.

The Backworlds hang by a Quantum string, a thread about to snap. Annihilation is coming if Craze can’t stop it.

The genocidal alien he had trapped breaks free, destroying a ship belonging to the Backworlds’ oldest enemy, the Fo’wo’s. The murderous alien wants to overtake the galaxy. The Fo’wo’s want another war.

The Backworlds’ best chance to survive is to overcome a century of hate and forge an alliance with the Fo’wo’s. Because of his history with the alien, Craze is recruited to represent his people. Now he’s the most hated man in the galaxy.

The looming war will be a holocaust unless he can stop it, knowing salvation comes at a price.

Boing Boing gives The Backworlds 5 stars! "This is a fun, fast paced novel that reminded me a bit of early Heinlein".

EXCERPT
Commander Hunninger tapped an icon on her tab and jabbed it in Craze’s face. “You really want to say no to this?”

The screen was too close. He grabbed the device from her manly fingers and brought the image into focus. A brand new, state-of-the-art, mini city docking facility. Pardeep Station had never seen finer and probably never would. Better protection from the dust storms was a necessity, and folks had to get out of the cold. Craze tired of the stench of the sick. “How much is it goin’ to cost? Everyone on this moon barely has three chips to jangle in their holey pockets.”

“No chips.” She smiled. Her wide mouth contained a lot of very white teeth.

Three good sucks on his air hose and Craze knew he wasn’t dreaming. He narrowed his eyes. “There’s still a price.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH M. PAX
-What inspired you to become a writer?

Wondering what life would be like if I was X or lived somewhere else, these thoughts have been in my head since I was young. I had to be a writer. It’s what I am.

-If you could visit your book’s world for a day, what one thing would you do?

I would have a drink in Craze’s Tavern. Absolutely and definitely. He makes the finest malt in the galaxy.

-Give us a fun or interesting fact you learned researching this book.

There are worlds more habitable than Earth. They’re called super habitable. I’m still trying to imagine what a world more suited to life would be like.

-Which of your characters would you go out for drinks with? I’m always hanging out with my characters. They’re in the corner right now glaring at me. If I was in the Backworlds, however, I think I’d like to share a drink with Captain Kaesare and hear about the places she visited and the people she met.

-If you could go back in time and give your pre-published self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t hesitate about publishing ebooks. Do it! Now and without delay!

-Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

Some genres scare me more than others, but I will definitely write in others. I have plans for contemporary fiction, women’s fiction, and a historical series.

  3. Thanks again, Mary, for another awesome interview. I never knew there were super habitable planets out there. What does that mean? Less natural disasters? Makes you think. I love that your characters are always with you. How could they not? I'll think I'll join you at Craze's Tavern for a malt. We can discuss lots of interesting stuff!
